Night 1 Greek Mythology Story 13
Odysseus Takes Ten Years to Get Home
Odysseus helps win the Trojan War, then spends ten more years trying to get home, which is the most mythological version of a commute going completely off the rails.
The Odyssey is not a trip. It is a return under attack

Yuma
After Troy falls, Odysseus just wants to get back to Ithaca. Wife Penelope, son Telemachus, kingdom, bed, normal life.
But the trip home takes ten years. Ten.
The Odyssey is called a nostos, a return story, but emotionally it is a road trip from hell.

Aoi
Ten years after already spending ten years at war?

Yuma
Yes. Twenty years away total. That is why home is not a background detail.
Home is the whole prize. Every monster matters because it delays return, and every delay makes Ithaca more fragile.

Haru
So it is not random episodes. It is pressure on the idea of getting home.

Yuma
Exactly. Odysseus is not just adventuring.
He is trying to remain someone who can still belong at home after the world keeps deforming him.
The Cyclops episode shows his genius and his ego

Yuma
The famous Cyclops is Polyphemus. Odysseus and his men get trapped in the cave.
Polyphemus eats some of them. Odysseus says his name is Nobody, gets the one eyed cannibal drunk, blinds him, and escapes under sheep.

Daisuke
That is gross as hell and annoyingly brilliant.

Yuma
It is perfect trickster work. When Polyphemus screams that Nobody is hurting him, the other Cyclopes think he has no human attacker.
That is genius. But then Odysseus sails away and cannot resist shouting his real name.

Aoi
Why would he do that?

Yuma
Pride. He wants credit. Polyphemus is Poseidon’s son, so he prays to Poseidon against Odysseus.
One loudmouth moment becomes years of sea trouble. The man wins and immediately snitches on himself.
Every stop tests a different weakness

Yuma
The Lotus Eaters test forgetfulness. Eat the lotus and you stop wanting home.
Circe turns men into pigs, then becomes a powerful helper and lover. The Sirens sing knowledge and desire so beautifully sailors steer into death.
Scylla and Charybdis force a choice between losing some men and losing all.

Haru
So the monsters are psychological traps too.

Yuma
Yes. Odysseus survives because he plans.
For the Sirens, he plugs the crew’s ears with wax and has himself tied to the mast so he can hear the song without steering into death.

Daisuke
Self control by admitting your own dumb ass needs rope.

Yuma
Exactly. Then there is Calypso, who keeps him on her island and offers immortality.
That is huge. Comfort, sex, no death, island life.
He still wants home and Penelope. Odysseus says no, because belonging beats even the fantasy vacation.
Penelope is fighting a different war at home

Yuma
Meanwhile in Ithaca, Penelope is surrounded by suitors eating his food and trying to crawl into his marriage. She delays them by weaving a shroud by day and secretly unweaving it at night.
That is not passive waiting. That is resistance with fabric.

Aoi
She is buying time with a loom. That is so good.

Yuma
Odysseus returns disguised as a beggar, tests the house, then wins the bow contest. The bow is his.
The bed is his. The identity proof is not just face recognition.
It is knowledge of the marriage bed he built around a rooted olive tree.

Haru
Home is proven through shared secrets.

Yuma
So Odysseus wins Troy with tricks, angers Poseidon by bragging at a Cyclops, survives the road trip from hell, while Penelope stalls every guy trying to replace him.
He finally gets home not because he is strongest, but because he and Penelope are both dangerously clever.
